Fifty MPs have signed the impeachment motion against parliament speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed initiated by the parliamentary group of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
MDP decided to move the motion against Nasheed, who is also the president of the ruling party, after accusing him of violating parliamentary procedures and stalling a no-confidence motion against the attorney general.
Adhadhu can confirm that 50 MPs, including Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, have signed to impeach Nasheed.
Siyam is the leader of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and has endorsed president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for re-election in the September 9 presidential polls.
A no-confidence motion to remove the speaker or deputy speaker must be submitted with the signatures of no less than one-fourth of parliament's full membership. That is 22 out of the 87 MPs.
According to the constitution, a no-confidence motion can be passed with a simple majority. That is 44 MPs. There are currently 56 MDP MPs.
At a press briefing on Tuesday afternoon, MDP’s PG leader Mohamed Aslam said Nasheed has been repeatedly violating the parliamentary procedures and moving forward by only consulting with MPs who are “on his side.”
“All of us have to accept the reality. This is not a private matter and this is not someone’s private home. This is the People’s Majlis,” he said.
