A state minister has been fired over a tweet accusing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of being a thief.
Hassan Mughnee was summoned to the President’s Office two days ago. The government spokesperson Miuvaan Mohamed confirmed his dismissal on Wednesday.
He did not disclose the reason for the dismissal. However, Adhadhu understands that Mughnee was fired for violating the disciplinary procedure of political appointees.
Mughnee first served as the managing director of the state electric company (STELCO). He was later appointed to the environment ministry.
In a now deleted tweet, he called Solih the “Hinnavaru thief” - referring to the president’s home island - leading a corrupt team of thieves who are incapable of running a company.
Mughnee was criticizing the managing directors of some state-owned companies. He denies having sent the tweet, even though it was sent from his account.
Mughnee was in the government on a slot of Jumhooree Party (JP) which formed a coalition with the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) during the last presidential election in 2018.
JP disagrees with some government policies but has decided to remain in the government till the end of the current term.
However, the party has launched its own campaign for the September 9 presidential election. JP’s leader Qasim Ibrahim is expected to run against Solih who wants a second term.
