Three people were arrested on Friday (February 27) for trying to smuggle more than two kilograms of drugs into the Maldives.

The suspects were 29-year-old Looth Ibrahim, 21-year-old Ahmed Rishmah and 38-year-old Ranjini Jeevananthan of Malaysia.

Looth and Rishmah were arrested in Male', while the Malaysian national was arrested at the Velana International Airport (VIA).

Ranjini and Looth were remanded in custody for 15 days, while Rishmah was remanded in custody for five days.

The warrant states that Looth and Rishmah were arrested when they went to a guesthouse to collect the luggage containing the drugs.

The two men tried to escape and refused to provide a urine sample for testing for drug use, the court order said.
