Villimale' has recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 163 yesterday (February 9).

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said the poor air quality could cause health effects to everyone, especially sensitive groups (children, the elderly and those with respiratory/cardiovascular issues).

The air quality was also poor in Male' and Kulhudhuffushi, with health warnings to sensitive groups.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office), poor air quality is likely to persist over the next four days.

The MET Office urged caution when involved in outdoor activities.

Haze is caused by transboundary air pollution carried by the seasonal northeasterly winds, reducing visibility and impacting air quality.

It intensifies in December and January due to factors like factory pollution in neighbouring countries such as India.
