The government has decided to tighten guidelines for tourists staying at hotels and guesthouses in local islands.

Speaking at an event to open the ruling party's main office in Male' on Thursday night (January 8), Muizzu said his government is working to promote local tourism.

He claimed that installing ATMs in all local islands is a measure taken by his government to promote local tourism.

But residents have complained about the behaviour of tourists, Muizzu said, stressing the need to tighten standards to be followed by visitors.

"So, to improve these things. We are amending the guidelines. The relevant rules. The standards that tourists should follow when they are on the island," he said.

Muizzu further said the cooperation of island councils is necessary to properly implement the new guidelines.

During his visits to the islands last year, Muizzu heavily criticised tourist behaviour while addressing the people of Alif Alif Ukulhas.
