The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) had 74,048 members at the end of last year, while the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had 43,784 members, the Election Commission (EC) said on Saturday (January 3).
Only the PNC, MDP and Jumhooree Party (JP) have more than 10,000 members. The JP had 12,343 members as of last year.
Many new members were registered to the PNC last year, while some people have complained that they were registered as PNC members without their knowledge through forged signatures and stolen data.
Some of the cases have been reported to the police and investigations are ongoing.
The PNC gained 5,383 new members since June 2025. During that period, the MDP had 19 new members.
The JP has the highest number of members leaving the party. A total of 1,113 members left the party since June 2025. The MNP had the second highest number of quitters with 703 members. The Democrats had the third highest number with 595 members leaving the party.
The PNC had 68,968 members at the end of 2024. It was followed by the MDP with 43,142 members. The JP came in third with 13,826 members while the now-dissolved Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) had 12,174 members.
In addition, by the end of 2024, the MDA had 9,210 members while the Adhaalath Party had 9,049 members. The Democrats had 3,667 members during the period, while the now-dissolved Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD) had 2,359 and the PNF had 2,822 members.
