Malé, Maldives: Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has formally expressed interest in hosting the U20 SAFF Championship 2026, following approval from its Executive Committee.

The proposal has been submitted to the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), marking a significant step toward bringing another major regional tournament to the country.

If selected, this will be the first time the Maldives hosts a SAFF age-group competition, further expanding the nation’s growing footprint in international football events. The Maldives previously hosted the UEFA Assist U15 International Tournament in Addu City in 2019, demonstrating its capability to organize youth-level competitions at a high standard.

The country also has a strong history of hosting major senior tournaments, including the SAFF Championship in 2008 and 2021, as well as the AFC Challenge Cup in 2014, all of which were widely praised for their organization and fan engagement.

FAM stated that expressing interest in hosting the U20 championship reflects its commitment to advancing youth football development and creating international opportunities for young Maldivian players.

The Executive Committee believes the Maldives possesses both the passion and infrastructure required to successfully host an event of this magnitude.

The proposed tournament is scheduled for March–April 2026, pending SAFF’s final decision. FAM noted that it stands ready to begin full-scale preparations should the hosting rights be awarded to the Maldives.

SAFF’s Executive Committee will now review all expressions of interest before confirming the official host nation. Further updates will be provided once a decision is reached.
