Male' Maldives: Football Association of Maldives (FAM) has announced that the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has officially selected the Maldives to host the U20 SAFF Championship 2026, marking the first time the country will stage a SAFF youth tournament.
The competition is scheduled to take place from 22 March to 3 April 2026, with the tournament calendar already shared with all SAFF member nations.
In its official statement, FAM described the decision as a historic milestone for Maldivian football, reflecting SAFF’s confidence in the Maldives’ ability to deliver a well-organised, high-standard international event.
The hosting rights also underline FAM’s commitment to strengthening youth development pathways and creating meaningful opportunities for emerging footballers across the region.
“FAM is confident this will be a successful and memorable championship, supported by the strength and unity of the entire Maldivian football family as preparations begin,” the statement read.
The confirmation follows the executive committee’s earlier approval for FAM to formally express interest in hosting the championship.
This move was seen as another major step toward bringing prominent regional tournaments to the country, building on the Maldives’ growing experience in staging international football events.
While this will be the first SAFF age-group competition hosted in the Maldives, the nation has previously proven its capability through events such as the UEFA Assist U15 International Tournament in Addu City in 2019.
The Maldives has also earned praise for successfully hosting high-profile senior competitions, including the SAFF Championship in 2008 and 2021, and the AFC Challenge Cup in 2014.
FAM emphasised that hosting the U20 championship aligns with its long-term vision to elevate youth football, provide international exposure for young Maldivian players, and showcase the country’s readiness to organise events of significant regional importance. With the dates now confirmed, preparations will commence in coordination with local stakeholders and SAFF.
Further details regarding tournament operations, venue arrangements, and organisational plans will be announced by FAM in due course.
