The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has refused to provide details of the alleged corruption cases against President Mohamed Muizzu despite a request under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

More than 20 cases have been filed with the ACC linking Muizzu with corruption when he was the Housing Minister and Mayor of Male'. The anti-corruption watchdog earlier confirmed that it was investigating these complaints.

But the ACC media team has repeatedly refused to provide details of these cases, prompting Adhadhu to submit an RTI request on September 29.

The ACC did not respond to the RTI and asked for another 14 days to prepare their response under the law.

In its response sent on October 29, the ACC said it could not provide the requested information as it “relates to matters that fall within the scope of ongoing or legally privileged investigations”.

In deciding not to disclose the information, the ACC referred to Article 24 (a) of the law.

Although the ACC has kept the corruption allegations against Muizzu secret, some details have been made public in the past.

In response to a letter from a private individual, the ACC said on February 13, 2022, that many cases were from when Muizzu was the Housing Minister. They include complaints over the Hiya flat recipients list.

Other cases include awarding the Hiya project to the highest bidder, fraud in creating the flat recipients' list and awarding projects to companies for personal gain.

Additionally, Adhadhu exposed in 2023 that several foreign companies had deposited large amounts of money into Muizzu's personal account while he was the minister.
