The parliament has passed the Maldives Intellectual Property Office Act to protect and promote intellectual property in the country.
The State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) committee brought eight amendments to the bill. It was passed by the parliament with 68 votes.
The bill was proposed by ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP Hussain Hameed who represents Kudahuvadhoo constituency.
According to the bill, intellectual property includes trademarks, patents, copyrights, industrial designs and geographical indications.
When the bill becomes law, a special office will be established under the name of the Maldives Intellectual Property Office.
The office's responsibilities include registration of intellectual property and the compilation of a registry. It also includes raising awareness of intellectual property and enforcing obligations under international treaties.
The Registrar of Intellectual Property will be the head of the office. The registrar will be appointed by the Economic Minister for a five-year term.
