A bill has been proposed to the People's Majlis to make gambling and operating a gambling establishment an offence in the Penal Code.

In a post on social media X, President Mohamed Muizzu said the bill was sent to the parliament on Wednesday.

Adhadhu understands that gambling is already prohibited by the Penal Code. But currently, there are restrictions to stop online gambling.

The new bill is expected to resolve the issues. Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham previously said that the law would be amended to ban gambling.

Online gambling games such as poker have become common lately. Maldivian bank cards are not allowed to be used for gambling, but they are not monitored properly.
