Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is scheduled to visit the Maldives on an official visit.

Sri Lankan media reported that he is due to visit the Maldives to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of foreign relations between the two countries.

Foreign relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka were established on July 29, 1965.

Media reports said, citing Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry officials, that Dissanayake will meet President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during the three-day visit.

Meanwhile, some reports say efforts are underway to establish a free Economic Zone and Free Movement Zone between the two countries.

The Maldives Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the visit. This could be the first visit by a head of state during the current administration.

There were reports that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi would visit the Maldives on Independence Day this year. But there has been no update on those reports.
