The UK Government and the Counter Terrorism Intelligence Department of the Maldives Police Service have conducted terrorism training for the Maldivian police officers.
Police said the UK government's International Protect and Prepare program targeted North Central Police employees. The training was conducted in Alif Dhaal Mahibadhoo island.
Police said they conducted a "Terrorist Incident First Response Awareness" program and a "Terrorist Incident Command Response Awareness" program. Both training programs were conducted last week.
Police said skills on how to be vigilant and respond to a terrorist attack were taught during the training. The training also focused on how the police will respond in the event of a terrorist attack.
Two notable terrorist attacks have been carried out in the Maldives. A bomb blast occurred in September 2007, while there was an assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed in May 2021.
Twelve tourists were injured in the Sultan Park bombing in 2007. However, no one was seriously injured. Police arrested 12 people in the 48 hours following the attack. They were 10 locals and two foreigners.
Nasheed, two of his bodyguards and two others, including a British citizen, were injured in the bomb blast near his family home in Male'. Ten people were arrested in connection with the attack.
