The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called for nation-wide May Day rallies as two employees were fired from the state's Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO).

WAMCO Hithadhoo branch fired two employees for participating in MDP's activities. The branch manager Moosa Mohamed attended an MDP rally on April 24 while senior administrative officer Mohamed Afzal joined the welcoming of MDP President Abdulla Shahid on his arrival in Addu city.

The MDP has condemned their dismissal and called on workers across the country to raise their voices on Labour Day or International Workers' Day, celebrated across the world on May 1.

In a post on X, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that participation in political parties is a constitutional right of every citizen.

He called on the government to stop dismissing employees because of their political views and urged to end the culture of threatening employees.

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail expressed concern over their dismissal and called on the people to protest on May Day.

“While we celebrate May Day tomorrow [Thursday] to advocate for workers’ rights, workers are currently experiencing extreme job insecurity, it is unacceptable that people continue to be fired based on their political ideology,” Fayyaz wrote on X.

"I call on all workers to raise their voices across the country tomorrow against the government's violation of workers' rights."
