Young people demanding justice for Hawwa Yumnu, 21, who had an unexplained fall from a building in Male', have staged a digital protest, with some demonstrating on Minecraft.

After five consecutive nights of protesting on Majeedhi Magu, on Tuesday night, the protestors used digital platforms to raise their voice against injustice and demand an end to impunity.

Protestors used X-Space, TikTok Live and Minecraft to express their views. This is the first demonstration held on a gaming server in the Maldives. More than 38 gamers joined the protest.

An individual involved in the event posted on social media that they were happy with the response, as the event had been organized in just an hour.

The youth protestors have planned a protest on the streets tonight and have called for as many people as possible to participate in the protest.

The demands:

  • Conduct a transparent investigation
  • Arrest and prosecute everyone involved in the case
  • Police must explain inconsistencies in video footage
  • Disclosure of evidence obtained for the investigation
  • Police must apologize for giving false information
  • Conduct an inquiry into the police investigation
  • Resignation of Police Commissioner Ali Shujau
  • Resignation of Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen
  • Resignation of Home Minister Ali Ihusaan

Police believe Hawwa Yumnu fell from a window in the stairwell of Henveiru Fentenoy house on April 18. Raudh Ahmed, 21, who was with her at the time of the incident, left the scene and did not report to authorities.

The police have faced immense criticism over their response following Yumnu's fall. There have been accusations of a cover-up because the case involves relatives of wealthy and politically influential figures.
