The Criminal Court has acquitted seven people charged with assault with the intent to murder former Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem.

According to the ruling, the most important evidence submitted by the prosecution was the CCTV footage. However, the CCTV timeline contained contradictions, raising doubts about their guilt, it stated.

"The victim was submitted as a witness in this case and no further evidence to corroborate his testimony was submitted," the court said.

"The investigator's statement and the investigator's testimony at trial are based on video footage obtained in this case and are not sufficient evidence to prove the charges in the absence of credibility of the video footage and the analysis report."

In addition, the court said the prosecution had not submitted any additional evidence to support they committed the crime.

The suspects are Midhuhath Adam, Mohamed Jazlan, Ahmed Maisan Hashim, Rajuwan Latheef, Shamal Hussain, Abaan Abdul Hannaan and Zayan Naseer.

Shameem was attacked by two men on a motorcycle on January 31, 2024. He sustained a bone fracture after he was struck with a hammer.
