The Prosecutor General's (PG) office is reviewing charges against Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan, who are accused of disrupting the International Yoga Day event in June 2022.
Public Prosecutor and Spokesperson Ahmed Shafeeu said they requested a review in October last year.
He said the PG office agreed to halt the proceedings in the Criminal Court until the case is reviewed.
"The PG will decide whether to proceed with the case," Shafeeu stated.
When a case is submitted for review, it will be assigned to a new lawyer, and the PG will review and then decide whether to proceed.
Sheikh Nishan and Sheikh Fazloon were charged with encouraging an act of terrorism in connection with the incident.
The PG office had earlier said there were videos of them encouraging riots and religious extremism.
On June 21, 2022, as the yoga event began at 6:30 am, a group of people stormed the Galolhu stadium, attacked participants and obstructed the activity.
The group forced their way into the stadium after dismantling a fence and damaging some barricades. It took about 40 minutes for police to remove them. Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.
The group entered while former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof was speaking at the opening ceremony, protested loudly and forcibly stopped the event. The Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives and other diplomats were among the participants.
