Adhadhu has learnt that two senior police officers are under investigation for alleged involvement in the network to smuggle cigarettes from the airport duty free zone.

Adhadhu understands that a large amount of money was found in one of the two police officers. But police have not officially commented on the investigation.

Three people were arrested in connection with the case. But two of them were released with condition when summoned to court for a remand hearing.

They are 45-year-old Ahmed Afsal and 38-year-old police officer Yoosuf Nazir.

A reliable source told Adhadhu that the police officer tried to smuggle the cigarettes in a black bag with the help of duty-free workers.

The source said the police officer had smuggled cigarettes from the duty-free area on two previous occasions. He was caught with 140 cartons of cigarettes.

The third suspect, who remains in police custody, is 23-year-old military officer Mohamed Aiham. He was remanded for 10 days.
