Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has said that the agreement with Liverpool FC to promote Maldives as the club's official tourism destination is expected to attract more than 2.3 million tourists this year.
Speaking to Public Service Media (PSM) after his visit to the UK with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to launch the promotional campaign with Liverpool, Thoriq said the agreement is expected to attract more than 2.3 million tourists this year.
He said around 100,000 tourists are expected to visit the Maldives in the coming years as a result of the agreement. The duration of the agreement with Liverpool is three years and six months.
"Reaching a deal with a football club meant more tourists would visit the Maldives. The President decided to take this step. This will especially increase the number of tourists coming to the luxury market," he stated.
Thoriq noted that Liverpool has more than 200 million fans worldwide and reaches 397 million people every year through its social media accounts. He added that each promotional post about Maldives will reach this huge fan base.
In addition to promoting Maldives, Liverpool will support Visit Maldives' efforts to protect the environment in Maldives.
The UK has been the third largest source market for Maldives this year.
