The government has issued the permit under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act to the township being developed by Crystal Holdings at a cost of USD 790 million in Noonu atoll Dhigufaru lagoon, Dhekenenfaru reef and Kuramaadhoo.
According to the Economic Ministry, this is the first sustainable township permit issued under the SEZ Act. The huge investment is an important step towards bringing developments that include various sectors beyond the common tourism-based models, the ministry said.
The government says the main highlight of the first township Ayla project is the state-of-the-art hospital. This has been included as a compulsory facility in townships under the SEZ Act.
The ministry said the healthcare facility, which will combine luxury and residential components, will allow the township to establish itself as a premium destination in medical and wellness tourism.
The township will also have an international hospitality and leadership school and an island dedicated to advanced agriculture and aquaculture systems, the Economic Ministry said.
The ministry added that 60 percent of the electricity needed for the facility will be generated from renewable energy.
The estimated occupancy date for the township is 2028. This project will facilitate employment opportunities and regional business activities to achieve national development goals, the ministry said.
