US President Donald Trump has announced a 10 percent tariff on Maldivian goods imported into the United States.

The new tariff rates were announced by the US government yesterday. From April 5, the base rate tariff will be imposed on Maldivian imports. The Maldives government has not yet commented on the matter.

Maldives mainly exports fish to the United States. According to US government figures, Maldives imported USD 17 million worth of goods to the country in 2022.

Trump said the decision was in response to tariffs and duties on US imports. Trump believes this will increase productivity in the United States.

Economists have warned that the tariffs will slow down the global economy and may cause a recession.
