President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Justice Hussain Shaheedh to the Supreme Court.
His oath of office was administered by Justice Aisha Shujune Muhammad during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Wednesday afternoon.
The newly appointed Justice was presented his appointment letter by the President during the ceremony.
During the People's Majlis sitting today, sixty-four MPs voted unanimously in favor of appointing him to the Supreme Court.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended his name to the President to fill a vacancy in the Supreme Court following the resignation of Justice Husnu Suood.
Suood resigned after three Supreme Court justices, including himself, were suspended following the launch of disciplinary proceedings. Suood said he resigned in protest of intimidation by Muizzu and his Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham.
The other two justices who were suspended are Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr. Azmiralda Zahir. Their suspension came as the top court's bench prepared to hear a constitutional case on MP disqualification.
