The People's Majlis has today approved High Court Chief Judge Hussain Shaheed to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Sixty-four MPs voted unanimously in favor of appointing him to the Supreme Court.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) recommended his name to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to fill a vacancy in the Supreme Court following the resignation of Justice Husnu Suood.

Suood resigned after three Supreme Court justices, including himself, were suspended following the launch of disciplinary proceedings. Suood said he resigned in protest of intimidation by Muizzu and his Attorney General (AG) Ahmed Usham.

The other two justices who were suspended are Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr. Azmiralda Zahir. Their suspension came as the top court's bench prepared to hear a constitutional case on MP disqualification.

Shortly before their suspension, the parliament approved a bill to remove two justices and shrink the Supreme Court bench to five members. However, Muizzu returned the bill for consideration.

The judges were suspended after the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced an investigation against them. But it was later revealed that the ACC and JSC were investigating the same cases.

Meanwhile, Azmiralda has filed a case against ACC President Adam Shamil alleging him of corruption. The case has now been registered at the ACC.
