The People's Majlis has today approved Moomina Waheed as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Sixty-seven MPs voted in favour while three MPs abstained from the vote. She was nominated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The post became vacant following the resignation of former HRCM Vice President Adhuham Abdulla in 2023.
He resigned after it was revealed that he had relocated to Australia and had continued to take the salaries despite not attending work for four months.
With the recent amendments to the HRCM Act, the President and Vice President of the independent institution will now be appointed by the President.
The law also stipulates that the President and Vice President of HRCM must submit their resignations to the President if they wish to give up their post.
In addition to the HRCM, the President will also appoint the President and Vice President of the Elections Commission (EC).
