An oil tanker from Fuel Supply Maldives (FSM) ran aground a reef to the northwest of Gaaf Alif Nilandhoo island on Sunday.

Nilandhoo Council President Nasih Ibrahim told Adhadhu that the authorities were informed when the council received reports about the incident.

"We found out that the boat had run aground the reef when a resident saw it in the morning and informed the council. We have now notified the police and MNDF [Maldives National Defense Force]," he said.

Nasih said the island council was trying to communicate with the people on board and check for any oil leaks.

He added that the vessel will be refloated as soon as possible in consultation with the relevant authorities.

The FSM oil tanker carries fuel to islands across the country.
