Tugboat fined MVR 12 million for damages caused to reef

The Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) has fined a tugboat MVR 12 million for damages caused after running aground Shaviyani Milandhoo reef.

The tugboat, Shwe Lin Yone, registered in the Republic of Niue and operated by a Singaporean company, ran aground in October 2024.

The ERA said in an announcement that the tugboat ran aground the Milandhoo reef and damaged 477 square feet of corals.

The tugboat is operated by Gloha Maritime Pte Ltd of Singapore. The company has been asked to pay the fine within 30 days.
