Male' floods: Temporary shelter for 226 people from 36 households

The National Disaster Management Center (NDMC) provided temporary shelter and food to 226 people from 36 households affected by floods in Male' on Friday.

Rainfall continued throughout the day, flooding the entire capital city and damaging houses and businesses.

NDMA received calls for assistance from 774 premises while 554 premises requested sandbags to stop flood waters.

Severe weather was experienced all across the country on Friday with floods and damages reported in several islands.

NDMA said swell waves caused damages in Raa Inguraidhoo and Shaviyani Maroshi islands.

The islands affected by floods were:

  • Faafu Nilandhoo - 80 percent of the island flooded
  • Kaafu Himmafushi - 60 percent of the island flooded
  • Kaafu Guraidhoo - 60 homes damaged
  • Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo - 10 homes damaged
  • Dhaalu Meedhoo - 10 homes damaged
  • Faafu Magoodhoo - nine homes damaged, 1 home evacuated
  • Faafu Feeali - one home evacuated
  • Alif Dhaal Maamigili - 4 homes damaged

Meanwhile, Kaafu Himmafushi island experienced a power cut due to heavy rainfall.

Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) earlier said that rainfall will continue into the weekend and is likely to improve after Saturday.

An official from the Met Office told Adhadhu that continuous rainfall will continue until Saturday and better weather is expected from Tuesday.
