Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon has held discussions with Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on conducting joint military exercises and obtaining military equipment from India.
The meeting was held today during Ghassan's first official visit to India since assuming the post of Defense Minister.
In a post on X, the Defense Ministry said discussions were held on strengthening defence ties between the two countries. No further details were provided.
However, Indian media reported that discussions were held on conducting joint military exercises and obtaining equipment from India for the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
Ghassan was a leader of the India Out campaign carried out by the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) when they were in the opposition.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu won the 2023 presidential election through anti-India rhetroci but his government has now distanced itself from the campaign and blamed former President Abdulla Yameen for the sentiments.
