The Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has informed Channel 13 that efforts were underway to revoke its broadcasting license as its parent company Media Ring Pvt Ltd is on the list of companies to be dissolved by the Economic Ministry.
In a letter to Channel 13, Broadcom said they had received a letter from a shareholder of Media Ring Pvt Ltd expressing concern because Channel 13 was continuing to broadcast although the company was listed to be liquidated.
The letter to Broadcom was sent by shareholder and Managing Director Ahmed Nasif. He said he had sought cancellation of the license on the grounds that he had approached the company's secretary for the transfer of his shares and dismissal.
But since no decision (board resolution) of the company has been submitted, Broadcom pointed out, in its letter, two requests have been made for a meeting with Media Ring Pvt Ltd.
"The dissolution process under Section 7/2023 (Companies Act) has commenced and the company has not paid the fee or penalty within three months of its dissolution under this section, and if the ministry has decided to dissolve the company for any reason, the permission or license issued by various state authorities shall also be revoked with the transfer of the business register to winding up status, the Broadcom has been advised by the ministry," the letter stated.
Broadcom informed Channel 13 to respond to the letter and submit it in writing to the commission before 2:00 pm tomorrow.
The decision comes at a time when Broadcom is also investigating the "Balcony" documentary aired by the channel. Channel 13 was ordered to remove all content of the documentary.
However, Broadcom has not yet decided on the action to be taken.
