The Criminal Court has extended the remand of an Indian couple arrested for allegedly smuggling two kilograms of drugs into the Maldives.

Aisha and Mohamed Shoaib, who arrived in on a Malaysia Airlines flight on October 15, were allegedly trying to smuggle the drugs hidden in a luggage.

Police said their luggage was screened and the drugs were found concealed on the bottom of the luggage under Aisha's name.

"One rubber was found in the luggage. It tested positive for heroin. The weight was 2.05 kg," police said.

The couple told the court that it was handed over by someone and that they did not know anything was hidden.

The court ordered the couple to be summoned in court once for another remand hearing once a lawyer is appointed.
