The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has fired 60 employees from Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo and Raa Alifushi islands.
Adhadhu understands that 38 employees were fired from the RDC Thinadhoo branch while 22 were fired from the RDC Alifushi branch.
Adhadhu has obtained letters of dismissal sent to the employees fired from Thinadhoo. It states that they were fired after their project was completed.
"[The reason for the cancellation of the employment agreement] is that this agreement is an employment agreement for a specific work and the Gaaf Dhaal Thinadhoo project carried out under this agreement has ended," the documents read.
Adhadhu could not obtain the letters of dismissal sent to employees fired from Alifushi. However, it is understood that they were also told the layoff was due to the completion of the project on the island.
RDC could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the mass layoffs from the state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
MDP's Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said in a post on X that the government lacks sincerity and that the number of political appointees was still rising.
"It shows the government's lack of sincerity when political appointees increase while employees are laid off in the name of cutting down costs. People's job security should not be threatened to increase political power," he said.
