A Bangladeshi man suspected of preparing food with cat meat has been arrested by the police.
The case was reported on Monday. Police said the suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning.
"The suspect has been taken into police custody," police said in a message to the media.
The Feline Welfare Organization, which works for the rights of cats, said in a post on social media that the undocumented Bangladeshi man worked at the Male' Dried Fish Market.
Following that, Maldives Immigration issued a five-day notice for 32-year-old Arfat Hossain to appear before authorities.
The Feline Welfare Organization alleges that he killed cats, prepared food from their meat and sold food parcels.
His kitchen was established in Galolhu Ranauraage'aage.
The man was reported to the police by the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare. The ministry said it would be closely monitoring the case.
