Bangladeshis working in the Maldives sent USD 31 million back to the country as remittances, a Bangladeshi bank has said.
The Maldives was 24th on a list of the top 30 countries for remittances to Bangladesh. According to statistics published by the bank, USD 31.69 million was sent from the Maldives between July last year and April this year.
The countries that topped the list included UAE, Saudi Arabia, UK, America, Oman, Malaysia and Kuwait.
A large number of Bangladeshis work in the Maldives. But the recruitment of Bangladeshi labourers is currently suspended due to a limit set by the employment law for 100,000 workers from any one country.
The latest statistics published by the Economic Ministry showed that 139,220 Bangladeshis work in the Maldives. However, the latest figure disclosed by the current government with reference to the immigration border control system was 90,624 Bangladeshi workers.
