A Maldivian national has died while trying to rescue a drowning tourist in Centara resort in Alif Dhaal atoll.

Police said the incident occurred in the Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa in the Alif Dhaal atoll.

The incident was reported at 11:05 am today and the deceased was identified as a 39-year-old Ahmed Afsal of Hithadhoo in Addu city.

He was taken to the Alif Dhaal Dhangethi health center for emergency treatment and was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He jumped into the sea to rescue a drowning tourist and the tourist is now in a stable condition, police said.

Maldives has been experiencing rough seas and strong winds for the past week and several weather related incidents have been reported.
