MP-elect Mohamed Rasheed who won the Nolhivaram constituency's seat for the 20th People's Majlis joined the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) on Wednesday.

Mohamed Rasheed was elected to Parliament after contesting as an independent candidate. The number of PNC MPs in the next Parliament rises to 73 with his signature.

The government won a supermajority of the Majlis with 66 MPs-elect who contested on PNC tickets, seven MPs-elect who won as independent candidates, three leaders of coalition partners, and Mohamed Abbas, who won in the Velidhoo constituency on a Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) ticket.

The addition of Rasheed takes the number of pro-government MPs-elect to 77, a much larger majority than the number of seats won by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the 2019 parliamentary elections.

The new MPs-elect are to be sworn in on May 28.
