Male' city Mayor Adam Azim has said the problem of dumping garbage on the roads of Male' can be solved by decreasing the waste disposal fees.

The city council employees removed 260.5 tonnes of garbage from the roads of Male' in the past 17 days.

Speaking on Adhadhu's "Ehcheh Kalheh" program last night, Azim said the problem would be solved if everyone took responsibility.

Appealing to the public to not dump garbage on the roads, Azim noted that the prices charged by pickups for waste disposal are too high for the general public.

He also believes that fees charged by Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) should be reduced as well.

"We are charging MVR 150. That amount is too high for the general public. We have to bring these charges down so that it can be affordable. Then we can find a permanent solution to this," Azim said.

The city council uses 51 vehicles for garbage collection, including 16 pickups with a capacity of 1.5 tons, one pickup with a capacity of two tons, 26 pickups with a capacity of 0.350 tons, one pickup with a capacity of 3.5 tons and six pickups that can carry three tons.

Garbage usually piles up on the road ahead of Ramadan. The most common items left on the pavement include large furniture, household appliances and electronics, all of which require additional payments to WAMCO for disposal.
