The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) announced yesterday that land reclamation at Giraavaru Falhu—a project designated to provide housing for Male’ residents—has resumed after a five-month hiatus, with 115 hectares reclaimed to date.

MACL shared this update via social media posts, marking the first time in months that the company has released information regarding the progress of the Giraavaru Falhu reclamation project.

In the post, the company stated that "68.8 percent of the planned 167.15 hectares" has now been completed. While MACL noted that the work is currently proceeding at a steady pace, it did not provide a completion date.

The disclosure comes amid revelations that the government issued a MVR 650.7 million loan to MACL to cover the costs of the reclamation. Although this loan is listed as an expenditure for the current year in the 2026 budget estimates, it was not included in the original budget approved for this year.

The project is being managed by Marine and Integrated Infrastructure Development, one of two subsidiaries established by MACL to oversee land reclamation and infrastructure projects.

The Giraavaru Falhu project was launched in May 2023 under the previous administration as a Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) initiative. At the time, the reclamation contract was awarded to Capital Marine Engineering and Construction (CMC).
