The Criminal Court has remanded former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid in custody for 30 days following his arrest last night on allegations of sexual assault.
Adhadhu understands that the Criminal Court ordered Shahid’s detention because his release could pose a threat to public safety and that there is a possibility of witness tampering.
While the court ordered the 30-day remand citing sufficient evidence to support the allegations, Adhadhu has learned that Shahid has denied all charges against him.
According to sources, police have not yet recorded a statement from the minor involved in the case. Sources informed Adhadhu that police told the court they intend to record the child's statement later today.
Shahid, who had recently announced his intention to contest the MDP presidential primary, was arrested last night following a search of his apartment at the Oceanfront Residence in Hulhumale'.
Police confirmed that Shahid was taken into custody on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor. Shahid has categorically denied the allegations.
"The stories being circulated to politically assassinate my character are baseless lies. I urge everyone not to spread such unsubstantiated claims," Shahid said in a post on X before his arrest.
