Official figures released by the Finance Ministry reveal that the Islamic Ministry has been allocated the lowest funding in the projected state budget for 2027.

The Finance Ministry submitted these statistics, which detail the distribution of the budget across various government ministries and sectors, to the People’s Majlis last week.

According to the data, the government’s budget formulation for the coming year prioritizes debt servicing and economic expenditure over certain religious and social sectors.

The figures show that the Islamic Ministry sits at the bottom of the list, with a budget allocation of just MVR 578.0 million.

In contrast, the government plans to spend MVR 6,279 million on the education sector and MVR 5,067 million on housing. By comparison, the Islamic Ministry's budget remains much lower.

However, spending on the Islamic sector has increased compared with the 2025 budget and the current year. The ministry was allocated MVR 439 million in 2025, while the figure for the current year stands at MVR 421 million.

Despite the total state budget being smaller than this year's, the government has passed a budget of MVR 59.7 billion for next year, anticipating higher expenditures and a larger deficit.

The budget presented to Parliament by Finance Minister Hassan Zareer is MVR 4.5 billion lower than this year’s MVR 64.2 billion. Nevertheless, government expenditure is projected to reach MVR 52.6 billion next year, marking an increase of MVR 3.3 billion compared to the current year.

The government stated that a big portion of this increased expenditure is directed toward development projects.
