The Criminal Court has sentenced Mariyam Dheena Solih, the former head of Fenaka Corporation’s procurement department, to one year and seven months in prison.

Dheena was convicted of using her official position to obtain an undue advantage for Blazon Ink Private Limited. The case involved a 2018 agreement in which she authorised payments to the company without verifying the completion of the contracted work.

The state had charged her with misuse of official authority, a charge the Criminal Court found her guilty of on October 11. Her sentence was formally handed down yesterday.

The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office previously stated that Dheena’s decision to release funds to Blazon Ink before the work was finished resulted in a loss of MVR 848,000 for Fenaka Corporation.

In addition to this prison sentence, the state has submitted two further cases against Dheena to the Criminal Court.

One of these cases involves the release of payments to a company contracted to provide CCTV systems to Fenaka before the goods were fully delivered. She faces charges of misuse of official authority in this matter as well.

The second pending case involves the subleasing of a vessel, chartered by Fenaka in 2018, to a close associate of Deena. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested charges against her for attempting to provide an undue advantage to a specific party in this instance.

The former Managing Director of Fenaka, Ahmed Saeed, is also currently serving a four-year prison sentence related to corruption within the utility company. His conviction stemmed from the signing of a settlement agreement with Blazon Ink.

Saeed faces allegations in several other cases as well. While some have already been forwarded for prosecution, investigations into other matters remain ongoing.
