Former President Mohamed Nasheed, Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has said that President Mohamed Muizzu has dragged the Maldives into the tensions between neighbouring India and Pakistan.

Speaking at a press conference in Addu City, Nasheed remarked that Muizzu’s visit to Pakistan last week was conducted "recklessly."

"While the risks faced by small nations, especially the Maldives, are significant, President Muizzu visited Pakistan without due consideration, once again bringing the Maldives into the middle of the disputes between India and Pakistan," Nasheed said.

Nasheed further warned that if India perceives the relationship between the Maldives and Pakistan as a threat to its security, the Maldives would bear the brunt of the consequences.

"This is a major challenge to the safety and security of the Maldives. If India feels their security is being compromised, it will have very bitter repercussions for the Maldives," he added.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed concern over Muizzu’s visit to Pakistan on Friday. During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal revealed that India is closely monitoring the relationship between the Maldives and Pakistan.

"It has been reported that agreements were signed between the two countries. We are monitoring these developments closely and will take any necessary steps if required," Jaiswal said, speaking in Hindi.

Muizzu conducted a state visit to Pakistan from October 20 to 23. During the trip, the Maldives signed 20 MoUs with Pakistan. Additionally, Pakistan briefed Muizzu on its official stance regarding the Kashmir issue.
