Ali Juman, 25, was arrested today on charges of inciting violence.
Police stated that Juman was taken into custody under a court order for using social media to encourage and call for arson attacks on buildings and vehicles, as well as the looting of a shop in the Maldives.
Juman’s social media posts allegedly urged people to take to the streets in protest against the allocation of a portion of Rasmalé to Eagle Hills, a company that supports Israel. His posts encouraged setting fire to buildings and targeting a popular retail outlet owned by a government-aligned MP.
His arrest follows that of former Deputy Minister Hassan Zihan, who was detained last Tuesday for Facebook posts inciting arson against state institutions.
In his posts, Zihan had encouraged setting fire to the Supreme Court, the President’s Office, and the People’s Majlis, remarking that such actions would be "fun."
