One in five people in the Maldives is suffering from symptoms of depression, according to the Health Ministry.
The Ministry stated that the prevalence of mental health conditions was identified through the results of the STEP Survey conducted between 2020 and 2021.
"Looking at the situation in the Maldives, the results of the STEP Survey carried out from 2020 to 2021 indicate that one in every five individuals experiences symptoms of depression," the Ministry said.
As mental health issues have become one of the most significant public health concerns in the Maldives today, the government is planning several activities to commemorate World Mental Health Day.
For World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated this year's theme as “Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.”
The purpose of this theme is to prioritise the experiences of those living with mental health conditions and to increase their active participation in formulating policies that affect their lives.
Global statistics show that as of 2023, one in seven people worldwide—approximately 1.2 billion individuals—suffer from a mental health disorder. The most common conditions identified include anxiety and depression, as well as more severe illnesses such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
However, authorities note that many individuals remain hesitant to seek help due to the social stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health.
The government is currently undertaking efforts to expand mental health services across the Maldives. In addition to increasing psychiatric services in atolls and regional hospitals, work is underway to establish a modern 50-bed psychiatric and mental health hospital in Hulhumalé that meets international standards.
The purpose of this hospital is to provide long-term treatment and rehabilitation for mental health patients under one roof.
The main activities to mark this year’s Mental Health Day are scheduled to take place from October 9 to 10 in Kaafu Kaashidhoo. These events include a "Community Colour Run" aimed at the general public and a "Resilient Family Fair." Institutions such as the National Mental Health Department, IGMH, and HPA will participate in these events, using sports and quizzes to raise awareness.
Furthermore, a discussion session titled "Israhvehinge Salla" (Senior Citizens' Dialogue) has been scheduled for the elderly. Conducted in a "Tea and Talk" format, this session aims to enhance the mental and emotional well-being of senior citizens. In addition to Kaashidhoo, various activities to mark the day are planned across different atolls throughout the country.
