The Chairperson of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), former President Mohamed Nasheed, has declared that he is ready to take over the government at any moment.
Presiding over the MDP Congress, Nasheed made these remarks in response to a statement by National Council member Ahmed Saleem.
"I am ready to take charge of the state this very second," he said.
Before his comment, Saleem spoke during the debate on proposed amendments to the party’s charter, arguing that the MDP’s administrative structure must be organised in a manner that allows it to assume governance at any time.
"In my view, the party's administrative framework should mirror the current structure of the state. This would ensure a seamless transition should we have to take over, even as soon as tomorrow," Saleem said.
Saleem further noted that during the tenure of "unscrupulous" administrations, such as the incumbent PNC government, the public could call upon the opposition to take over the reins of power at any given moment.
"The question before us now is whether we organise ourselves first and then reform the state, or whether we wait for the state to change before we adapt ourselves," Saleem added.
