The Maldives Police Service has announced that legal action will be taken against foreign nationals residing in the country who wear revealing clothing that violates public decency standards.

In a statement issued in Dhivehi specifically addressing the foreign community, the police noted that they have observed several instances where the attire of some expatriates has breached social norms.

"To prevent situations that could negatively impact community peace and stability, we wish to inform that this service will fulfil its legal mandate to stop such behaviour and take all available legal actions against those involved," the police statement read.

Authorities also urged employers and sponsors of expatriates to ensure that those under their care pay special attention to their conduct and refrain from such actions.

This warning follows the recent submission of an e-petition to the People’s Majlis, calling for a ban on expatriates and tourists wearing revealing clothing, such as bikinis, in public areas of inhabited islands.

The petition argued that the presence of foreigners and tourists in revealing attire in public spaces undermines Islamic morals and erodes the rich culture and traditions inherited from Maldivian ancestors.
