The main sessions of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) congress commenced today, focusing on the approval of party matters, constitutional amendments, and voting procedures.

Marking the third day of the congress, the opening session was dedicated to proposing and debating various amendments to the party’s basic regulations.

The second session of the day featured the presentation and debate of the "Great Change" resolution, while the third session focused on the presentation and discussion of a resolution regarding decentralisation.

Following these three sessions, the congress will move to a voting phase. It will then vote on investment agreements secured during the party's investment forum, with the official closing ceremony scheduled for tonight.

Key proposed amendments to the party's constitution include abolishing the positions of President and Vice President and establishing the Chairperson as the party's highest-ranking official.

Another agenda item is the vote on the "Great Change" resolution, a manifesto aimed at restructuring the Maldives' governance system. The manifesto was submitted by former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail.

Furthermore, the investment forum held yesterday marked a historic first for a political party in the Maldives. During the forum, various islands presented business proposals, several of which are expected to secure investor backing.

Today’s session of the MDP congress convened with the participation of 368 delegates.
