Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, who serves as the Vice President of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC), is set to represent the party at the opening ceremony of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) congress tonight.

Adhadhu has learned that the PNC accepted the invitation extended by the MDP to attend the event, designating Shiyam as their official representative for the opening session.

Shiyam’s attendance follows a similar gesture of cross-party engagement during the recent PNC congress, where MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed attended the opening ceremony upon invitation.

Following tonight’s inauguration, the MDP congress will feature an investment forum scheduled from tomorrow afternoon through the evening. The formal proceedings of the congress are slated to begin on Saturday morning.

The agenda for Saturday includes debates and voting on proposed amendments to the party’s constitution. Additionally, delegates are expected to deliberate and pass resolutions regarding major structural reforms and the decentralisation system.

According to the MDP, there are 986 eligible delegates for the congress. Most of these representatives have already registered to participate in the gathering.

The MDP has expressed concern over the government’s failure to facilitate a venue in Male' for the event. The party has arranged to hold the three-day congress at the Male' City Hall.
