The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has held discussions with the Male' City Council regarding the installation of smoking kiosks on several streets across the capital.
In a post on its official X account, the Council stated that the meeting was part of ongoing efforts to foster a tobacco-free society.
"They requested the installation of specialized kiosks for smokers on the streets of Male'. They noted that this initiative has been in development since 2005 but had remained unimplemented until now," said the Councilor for the Machangolhi North constituency.
Under the Tobacco Control Act, every individual has the right to be protected from exposure to secondhand smoke. To ensure this right, the law prohibits smoking in public areas.
However, despite the regulations established under the Act, effective enforcement of these measures has remained a challenge.
