The project to develop a bowling arena in the Ruhgandu 2 area of Hulhumale' Phase 1 has been awarded to a private company.
Approximately 10,000 square feet of the Ruhgandu area has been cordoned off with corrugated iron sheets for the construction of what will be the first bowling centre in the Maldives.
According to sources, the two-story bowling centre is estimated to cost a total of MVR 20 million. A source familiar with the matter said that the facility is being built to international standards and is capable of hosting global competitions.
Relevant government authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the project, which was awarded directly to a company without a public bidding process.
The project is being carried out under a financing model where certain government projects are funded through the Bank of Maldives (BML).
However, BML’s Head of Brand and Marketing, Mohamed Saeed, said that he was unaware of the bank providing any funding for the bowling centre.
The Ruhgandu area, where the bowling centre is being constructed, has been a popular venue for various social activities and major commercial events.
In addition to the bowling centre, President Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish an international-standard indoor go-kart arena in the Maldives, comparable to those in Singapore. Furthermore, he has pledged to develop an international racing and drifting track, a world-class surfing stadium at the 'Raalhugandu' area, and an indoor gaming centre at Sultan Park during his current term.
Muizzu has also decided to facilitate the construction of a netball complex and an international futsal complex.
