It has been revealed that over 300 individuals are being brought in to attend the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) congress, scheduled for September 15 to 18 at the Social Centre, to ensure voting aligns with President Mohamed Muizzu’s agenda.
According to Article 21 of the PNC Charter, the party’s Supreme Council, or Congress, must be held once every five years. The Supreme Council is composed of PNC Members of Parliament, constituency presidents and vice presidents, cabinet ministers and state-level appointees, as well as the heads of the party’s youth and women’s wings, and steering committee chairs or designated representatives from the islands.
Furthermore, the sixth clause of the same article stipulates that additional members appointed by the Party President, in consultation with the party’s Senate, may participate in the Supreme Council. These are not elected positions.
Sources have informed Adhadhu that a decision has been made to bring more than 300 people from across the country to participate in the congress under this provision. A reliable source said that these individuals are being brought in to vote in accordance with Muizzu’s preferences on matters put to a floor vote.
The congress will see the appointment of individuals to 49 positions within the PNC Supreme Council. Under the party’s charter, if the party is in power, the sitting President of the Maldives is not required to stand for election to the Supreme Council; by virtue of their office, the President is automatically a member.
Among the positions up for contest, public attention is focused on the candidates vying for the party’s vice-presidential slots.
Eight candidates have announced their intention to run for the vice-presidency. However, only six individuals are to be elected to the post.
